Fasting is the act of avoiding foods for a period of time either for faith(religious) or health reason. During periods of fasting, many believers gets their spirits tuned to God for effective fellowship with him. Many others also use fasting as a way to lose weight. Now in this article, our focus is on whether fasting is a right or wrong way to loose weight.
Before we begin, please take note that this isn't an attempt to say fasting with regards to our faith is wrong. No, not at all. Of course I do fast sometimes.
Now let's begin.
When the tables are turned and you stop eating altogether, your body has to draw on it's fuel stores to keep going. Nothing is wrong with this. In fact, it is a great advantage to us that we can eat a meal, store fuel and then use it until the next meal
People can store fat and glycogen, but their store are not unlimited. A person with just average fat stores has enough fat to provide the body with energy for weeks, even when no food no food at all is eaten.
On the other hand, the body's supply of carbohydrate is taken in, such as when the eater consumes a diet too low in carbohydrates or fails to eat at all, the glycogen stores last for less than a day. While glycogen runs out, the body's demand for the carbohydrate fuel glucose is as strong as ever.So how does the fasting body get the needed glucose? It begins to convert protein to carbohydrates. In fasting, the body has no external source of protein, and so it takes apart the protein in it's own muscles and organs to keep up the supply of glucose needed to feed the brain and nerves.
For this reason, dieters( not believers) should avoid both fasting and diets too low in carbohydrates. People who follow weight-loss schemes that employ fasting or low-carbohydrates diets drop weight quickly, especially at first. This is because they are using up protein from muscles and organs as fuel. protein contains only half as many calories per pound as fat, so it disappears twice as fast. Furthermore, with each pound as of body protein used for fuel, 3 or 4 pounds of water are also last from the body. Because of this, the person who stops eating altogether sees a great change in weight on scales.
